Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures
Well I finally picked up AoC today after some drama at the local EB. Damn system has ‘lost’ my order for the Collectors Edition of AoC so I had to make do with the standard edition.
After finding out it had a 30gig install I set it to install and went and did my grocery shopping and once I got back is was just finishing. So I make a coffee, get comfy and start the game…..guess what I see? An 800mb patch is required
So i spent the next 2hours cleaning the bathroom and kitchen (thrilling i know
) while waiting for it to update. After the 800mb update there was a few more smaller ones but they came down quickly which was a godsend.
After so many delays we finally got into the game and DAMN does it look good. It may not have the DX10 available like it was originally touted to have but, I don’t know any MMO that looks this good. Once at the character screen I spent the next hour or so researching the various classes and looking for suggestions for names on line on my lappy. After abit of customisation (This is also the most detailed customisation I have ever seen. Hell you can even give your character a black eye!) I had my character ready to go, Dahhak a Stygian Demonologist on the Bloodspire PVP Server.
Once in the game you can see Funcom has tried to keep to Robert E Howard’s vision of Conan where possible which is great to see. The opening ‘quest’ sees you saving a prostitute from a gang of scavengers which are picking the wreck of the slave ship you were on. In combat the adult theme continues with blood and what not going everywhere. I do love critical kills with the demo though, as your target screams and rolls around while on fire until he finally dies……..not exactly a nice way to die but, it does hold true to the Conan world.
After a bit of exploring I decided I had best get back to my uni work. While I have only played AoC for a few hours I have to say it has been a pretty hassle free launch, the servers have been stable, almost lag free (by Aussie standards anyway) and the game itself looks so very nice.
